The Native Americans were in America long before the Europeans came to America. It is believed that there were over 10,000,000 Native Americans in America at that time and that they had been there for at least 20,000 to 30,000 years. It was believed that the first ones arrived right after the ice age. Some think they were originally from northeastern Siberia and came to America over a land bridge across the Bering Sound. Some of the oldest Native American documented Indians are from 15,000 B. C. And they were the Sandia. The Clovis were from 12,000 B. C., and the Folsom were from 8,000 B. C.. Although it is believed that the Indians came from Asia, there were not many, if any, came from India. The reason they were called Indians was because Christopher Columbus landed there and thought he had landed on part of the Indies, in Asia.
The Europeans began to arrive in the 16th and 17th century the Native Americans were in awe by ships and the knives and swords, and cannons of the light skinned Europeans. They also brought with them mirrors, hawkbells, earrings, copper and brass kettles, and more. The Indians were upset by the greed of the Europeans because the Europeans wanted to take as much as they could from the soil, land, and timber, as well as the animal pelts, etc. The Indians were forced to move west in order to survive. The Europeans also brought many diseases to the Indians and many of them died from them.
There were many conflicts between the Europeans and the Native Americans and the Indians lost out as we all know. The Europeans thought they had to own it all and the Indians could do without. They were ran into the lands where there were not many resources of food. The white man killed off most of the buffalo, beaver, and other things the Indians used for sources of survival. To the white man, they were objects to make them rich. The last of the conflicts ended around the end of the 19th century. The last major war was more of a massacre than a war. In 1890 the warriors, women, and children were slaughtered by the U. S. Cavalrymen at Wounded Knee, South Dakota.
Some of the many Indian tribes that existed in America were/are Algonquin, Chumash, Delaware, Osage, Seneca, Cheyenne, Anasazi, Comanche, Lenape, Mohawk, Shoshone, Pueblo, Chinook, Cree, Creek, Mojave, Ute, Choctaw, Cherokee, Seminole, and more.
It is hard for us to comprehend what went on so long ago and it is sad to think that such a thing had to happen to so many Native Americans just because of greed. Greed is evil and it destroys men’s minds. It is not just this instance which proves that, it still happens today.
